Choosing the Best Mouse for You.
Mouse Ergonomics
The first PC mice were very much smaller than today's ergonomically designed mice, leading to a lot of hand strain on most adult users. Choose a mouse that will fit correctly in your hand. The larger your hands, the larger your mouse should be for the best level of comfort. If in doubt, pop into your local PC store and test out a few. If you are left handed, ensure you buy a symmetrical or left-handed mouse as many contoured mice are built for right-handers.
Wired or Wireless?
A wired mouse is connected to the PC by a flexible cord with either a USB or serial plug. The mouse's power is drawn from the PC and as such it requires no batteries. A wireless mouse does away with the need for the cord and instead transmits its information to a receiver that plugs into the PC. A wireless mouse requuires batteries to work and can sometimes be a little tempremental with transmitting a signal correctly. However, a great number of people are happy with these minor inconveniences to do away with the sometimes cumbersome cord.
Ball or Optical?
Choose an more modern optical or laser mouse over an older mechanical "ball". A ball mouse uses a rubber ball which turns small plastic rollers. These "mechanical" mice tend to collect a lot of dust and grime, leaving them performing poorly in no-time. An optical mouse uses a prescision optical sensor and is not restricted by moving parts and as such is far more responsive and requires far less cleaning.
How Many Buttons?
A modern mouse will have at least 2 buttons, most will have 3. The function of the 2 main buttons are already programmed by your operating system manufacturer however any additional buttons will be customisable to a great number of tasks such as acting as a "back" button for your browser, use of "macros" for gaming, use instead of "shift" or "alt" keys etc.
Does a mouse need a wheel?
For most people, once they have used a mouse with a mouse wheel, they will never contemplate returning to one without. Scrolling through a long document or website with the wheel is far easier and more intuitive than using the scroll bar or keyboard. If you can, get a mouse with a wheel. It is the one feature most people miss when they change to a wheel-less mouse.
How Much to Spend?
If you do a lot of gaming or image manipulation, consider a slightly more expensive specialised Gaming Mouse. A gaming mouse will have far more options and will have a much higher specification. For normal PC use or web browsing, a mid-range or budget mouse will usually be sufficient. Consider buying a separate mouse for your laptop PC when using it at home or in the office. A mouse is far more responsive and far easier to use than the "trackpad" built into the laptop. A wireless mouse or Bluetooth mouse is perfect for use with a laptop.
